Kenny Goodson of Hughes Springs is a master of today’s intersection between original musical composition, and high-tech software which helps to facilitate the conversion of musical ideas to published scores.  In 1995, Goodson initiated MADD Creations which provides original and adapted scores for marching bands throughout the state. In addition to being a former band director at Mount Pleasant, and other high schools, Goodson is the former Director of Computer Services at Northeast Texas Community College.  With this wealth of experience, Goodson is also scoring a third, feature-length 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Webb/honors film in as many years.  This year’s topic is Carroll Shelby, the emissary of the Muscle Car, and the philanthropist who has given a special edge to 91¹û¶³´«Ã½â€™s automotive program since 2007.

The 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Foundation has more than 300 scholarships available for the 2022-2023 academic year. The scholarships are not directly tied to FAFSA eligibility, so you may receive a scholarship even if you don’t qualify for PELL grants. What’s the catch? You have to apply!

Ruben Guerrero, an 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Honors Scholar, is the winner of a $50 Tribute Award for his achievements with acting and debating last fall.  Guerrero maintains two roles in the upcoming Webb/Honors film on Carroll Shelby to be premiered this 25 March at the Whatley Auditorium.  In one of the most engaging scenes of the film, he plays Shelby patron, Roy Cherryhomes, with a southern accent.  According to the book, Carroll Shelby byRinsey Mills, Cherryhomes helped make Shelby a great racer, but was also a very divisive figure in the early Dallas racing circles.  In the scene, based on the book, Cherryhomes gets into a fight over his assumed right to sit on a dishwasher.  Guerrero explores ethnic nuances as well with his second character, Dr. Alfredo Trento, the California surgeon who gave Shelby his second heart.  Guerrero’s accent and hand motions again provide the verisimilitude which makes the scene stand out.

Young people these days are lazy. Nobody wants to work anymore. Students just want college given to them. In a time where stereotypes like these have become widely accepted, Northeast Texas Community College (91¹û¶³´«Ã½) is finding the opposite to be true with its innovative Work4College Program. About 10 years ago, administrators at the small rural college started looking for solutions to rising student loan debt.  Like many institutions nationwide, they were seeing higher loan amounts and an increase in default rates.

Jessica Velazquez, a 2014-2016 member of the 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Honors program, Honors Northeast, has recently won her second Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.  The first, back in 2016, gave her a free ride to Texas A&M at College Station.  This award will enable Velazquez to pursue graduate school at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).  She will also continue to work with Dr. Carl Allen’s Histiocytosis-Lymphoma laboratory in the Pediatrics Hematology-Oncology Department at Baylor College of Medicine.

James Bradley Witt, Gary Gibson Witt, and Beverly Witt Wootten have provided a generous scholarship in the name of their parents, Dr. and Mrs. Bradley Witt.  The fund will cover registrations and costs for six student scholars of 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ to present their research at meetings of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) in six successive years. The NCHC is the oldest and most prestigious association for two- and four-year honors programs, and colleges in the United States.  Formed in 1966, it includes 900 member-institutions in Europe and America, and publishes two refereed journals and a monograph series.
